Salary job interview questions are somewhat of game in an interview process and it is usually best to avoid them until the completion of the process. Naturally, if your expectations are way beyond what is on offer then you have to question why you want to apply . Interviewers are interested in you, your achievements, your education and what you will bring to their institution.

If you are asked your current salary at the job interview, be sure to include all compensation benefits.  In addition if you have stock, stock options or deferred compensation, you should bring that up also. Typically, you will be asked for the last  number of years so they can ascertain if your growth has been consistent. If there are any unusual differences in the numbers, please ensure that you can explain why. For example, there may have been a freeze on bonuses or an unusual bumper year.

Of course the best thing to do is to give a tight salary range. If it you are interviewing for a sideways move a similarindustry, then your range should include a premium for the move. If you are moving industry like going from a startup to a bank, then you will need to consider the salary structure in that industry and temper your expectations accordingly.
