Although you will find numerous legitimate contests for writers, regrettably there also seems to be numerous questionable competitions developed to “scam” aspiring writers.
Numerous iniquitous individuals and/or crafty companies have capitalized on the naivete or desperation of beginning writers, who are so eager to obtain published that they’re willing to pay outrageous fees to enter contests that “guarantee” they will get published or promise thousands of dollars in prizes…

So how can you tell a hoax from a true contest?

Appear for once-a-year competitions which have a historical past and a list of previous winners.
Search for contests that list the actual judges – and then pick the ones which feature published authors, editors and/or agents.
Appear for a contact name, address, phone number for future reference. Like to ask for a list of winners.
Attempt to find a deadline date for the contest plus a date when winners will be announced.
Search for writing competitions with no or minimal entry charges.
If you discover a contest that demands an entry charge of more than £5 or £10 – read the fine print – find out what you are getting for your cash…
For instance, some legitimate contests might charge an entry fee and provide a critique of your work – whether you win or not – in return for your efforts and money.
Carefully consider the value from the prizes. Are you willing to try to write 1,500 words about a topic you’re not acquainted with – in order to have a chance at winning a £20 gift certificate
